Gitkin – Safe Passage (Wonderwheel, 2020)
Gitkin, Brian J’s cross-genre world music project masterfully combines Tuareg-style desert blues guitar, flavorful Latin American rhythms, retro chicha and spaghetti western surf guitar, funk, exotica, blues, New Orleans brass, cumbia, and Middle Eastern and Greek folk influences.
Although multi-instrumentalist Brian J is a;so a songwriter, Gitkin is his avenue to develop primarily instrumental music, highlighting his multifaceted guitar work. There is some singing on Safe Passage, featuring Brian J and the striking English and Spanish-language vocals Carol C (of Si*Sé) who performs on three songs.
Gitkin recorded Safe Passage at his home studio in New Orleans where he used vintage microphones, dubby spring reverbs and the idiosyncrasies of an analog tape machine.
