The Lokalophon label has announced the release of “The Zonke Family at the Studio.” This recording features the traditional music of the Marembe people, who live in Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
The Zonke Family (Zimbabwe) are masters of the unfortunately rare and endangered mapete mbira tradition. The mapete mbira is a giant mbira or kalimba whose players manage up to four independent rhythmic and melodic lines. The Zonke Family are bearers of an art that could soon be lost.
