Nation Beats’ Hot-Blooded Percussion and Mighty Brass Sound

Nation Beat – The Royal Chase (Nation Beat Music, 2020)

The Royal Chase by Nation Beat presents a spectacular mix of Brazilian forró, baião, and maracatu rhythms, New Orleans-style brass band jazz and funk. The Nation Beat collective is led by percussion maestro Scott Kettner who uses a drum set and various percussion instruments. On this occasion, the collective features a brass band format and various American and Brazilian guests.

The repertory on Nation Beat’s new album includes Brazilian classics as well as new material by Kettner and other composers. The Royal Chase is decidedly upbeat, combining irresistible rhythms with the mighty sound of a brass band.

The lineup includes Scott Kettner on drum set and percussion; Paul Carlon on tenor saxophone; Mark Collins on trumpet; Mariel Bildsten on trombone; and Joe Correia on sousaphone.

Guests include Cyro Baptista on percussion; Carolina Mama on vocals; Moses Patrou on vocals; Rob Curto on keyboards; Alan Friedman on keyboards; Pitoco de Aira on ilú drum; Collin Dejoseph on keyboards; and spoken word by Spyboy “Honey” Irving Banister.
