Artist Profiles: Djazia Satour

Djazia Satour was born in Algiers on December 9, 1980. She grew up in Algeria and arrived to Grenoble (France) in 1990.

At the age of 15, she entered a recording studio for the first time. She later toured with Gnawa Diffusion, providing backing vocals for four years.

She was 19 when the band MIG got together. MIG focused on her voice in combination with trip-hop. The band lasted six years.

Djazia has explored other musical genres such as blues and soul. She subsequently embarked on a solo career and released various solo albums.

Djazia Satour sings in English and Algerian Arabic. The favorite topics of her songs are the anguish of passing time, the aspiration for freedom, exile and wandering, and love.

Her style combines Algerian roots, indie folk, pop, chaabi and the rhythms of bendir frame drums. It has been described as borderless Mediterranean future folk.

After Klami and Alwâne, Djazia Satour released Aswât (Voices) which explored her Algerian musical heritage.
