Artist Profiles: Mehdi Qamoum

Mehdi Qamoum was born in Agadir, Morocco. He was raised in a family immersed in a Ganawa traditional music. He stood out in this field and formed his first band at an early age.

After connecting with several well-known and highly skilled musicians thanks to a local Jazzawyia meeting point for local Moroccan and visiting foreign artists, he received wider exposure.

A traditional Gnawa musician, Mehdi Qamoum has become skilled at numerous folk instruments including guembri (Gnawa bas slute), karkabas, bendir and a custom 4-string electric guembri  that he built himself.

Qamoum has collaborated with many acclaimed artists on national and international stages. He writes his own material, creating a fusion of music styles. His original songs recurrently tackle pressing social concerns including poverty, discrimination and challenges of life in the diaspora.
