Artist Profiles: Einar Selvik

Einar Selvik was born on November 18, 1979 in Bergen, Norway. He is a Norwegian composer, musician and creative architect behind the Nordic folk band Wardruna.

Selvik was the drummer in the black metal band Gorgoroth during 2000-2004. He released two albums with the band: Twilight of the Idols (2003) and Black Mass Krakow 2004 (2008).

He founded Wardruna in 2003. Selvik uses a wide range of ancient Nordic instruments, including drums, kravik lyre, bukkehorn, talharpa, as well as vocals intertwined with a contemporary soundscape.

Wardruna and Selvik have previously contributed extensively on the soundtrack and music for History Channel’s popular TV series Vikings, where Einar also appeared in two episodes as a singer. The substantial musical contributions to the show have exposed their music to a broad audience worldwide.

Wardruna have performed sold out shows worldwide, including major festival headline appearances.

Selvik was awarded the Egil Storbekken Music Prize 2020, a Norwegian national honorary award that was created in memory of the Norwegian musician, composer and cultural bearer Egil Storbekken. It is given to people who have made an extraordinary effort in various work with Norwegian folk music, and especially the older folk instruments.

Wardruna released its fifth full length album, Kvitravn (White Raven) on January 22, 2021 through Norse Music in the U.S. and Sony Music/Columbia Records (worldwide excluding the USA).

In 2022, Wardruna announced the released of a double set titled Kvitravn – First Flight of the White Raven.
