Noa’s Love for Bach

Noa – Letters to Bach (Naïve, 2019)

Israeli singer-songwriter, percussionist, and political activist Achinoam Nini, better known as Noa, is one of the best known Israeli artists in the world music scene. She has collaborated with iconic Palestinian and Algerian artists as well as pop stars and celebrated jazz and classical music artists. Noa’s album, Letters to Bach takes the music in an unexpected direction.

“Letters to Bach” grew from Noa’s profound admiration for the genius of Johann Sebastian Bach. She has added lyrics in English and Hebrew to Bach’s instrumental compositions. The topics range from love songs and appreciation of Bach to denouncing injustice and denial of climate change. Noa sings in styles that are not operatic or classical. Instead she sings in a way closer to musical theater, folk singing and also jazz scatting.

Noa’s performances on “Letters to Bach” are intimate and memorable, featuring vocals and guitar accompaniment played by her longtime collaborator Gil Dor.
