Doc Watson and Gaither Carlton – Doc Watson and Gaither Carlton (Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, 2020)
Doc Watson and Gaither Carlton is a fine album of American old time music by the iconic guitarist and singer Doc Watson and the talented Gaither Carlton.
The recordings that appear on Doc Watson and Gaither Carlton have never been released before. The tapes were recorded at early concerts by Doc Watson at New York City’s Greenwich Village in 1962. The shows included the infrequent appearances of Doc’s father-in-law, fiddler Gaither Carlton, who rarely performed outside North Carolina.
The album features instrumental pieces as well as ballads featuring Doc Watson’s familiar baritone vocals.
Soon after these recordings were made, Doc Watson became ono of the United States’ leading acoustic guitarists. Watson earned the National Medal of Arts and eight Grammy Awards.
The physical CD version of the album includes a 32-booklet with details about the two musicians and numerous photos.
Doc Watson and Gaither Carlton is a splendid album featuring old time music at its best.
