A Deeply Enthralling Journey through Danish Folk Traditions

Myrkur – Folkesange (Relapse Records, 2020)

Myrkur is the project of Danish multi-instrumentalist and singer Amalie Bruun. Although Bruun has been involved in black metal (a form of heavy metal), her album Folkesange has nothing to do with metal. Instead, it is a set of beautiful contemporary songs with spellbinding ethereal vocals and choral overdubs and lushly constructed instrumentation rooted in Danish folk traditions. She’s a deeply mesmerizing Nordic artist, similar in essence to Enya.

The lineup includes Myrkur on vocals, piano, nyckelharpa, lyre, violin, guitar, and frame drum; producer Christopher Juul on mandola and percussion; Joanna Quail on cello;  Stefan Brisland Ferner on viola and stråkharpa (bowed lyre); Kristian Uhre on  percussion; Ida Sandberg Motzfeldt and Veslemøy Aalde Heyerdahl on chorus; and Maria Franz on vocals.
