Mariel Martínez – Templanza (Mapa Records, 2017)
Templanza is the latest album by young tango vocalist Mariel Martínez. She is one of the finest performers in the current tango scene. Born in Buenos Aires, she relocated to Madrid in 2002 and established a European base that allows her to easily tour Europe. Her highly expressive and passionate vocals have the perfect companion in the hands of the Fabián Carbone Sextet. Carbone is a leading Argentine bandoneon player and his ensemble is also based in Spain which makes it a perfect fit.
The new recording features classic songs. Mariel and Fabián recovered the original handwritten arrangements of the groundbreaking orchestra of the Golden Decade of the Argentine tango: the ensemble led by acclaimed bandoneonist and composer Anibal “Pichuco” Troilo.
The lineup on Templanza includes Mariel Martínez on vocals; Fabián Carbone on bandoneón; Rocio Terán on piano; David Merlín on violin; Daniel Hurtado on violin; Blanca López Rubal on cello; and José Luis Ferreyra on upright bass.
Templanza is a gracefully elegant album, an impeccable example of exceptional tango craftsmanship.
