Transfixing Welsh Folk Music

9Bach Anian (Real World, 2016)

Anian is the new album by contemporary Welsh folk band 9Bach. This group to be one of the most exciting acts in the current British folk scene. Last year they won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in the category of Best Album.

Anian showcases 9Bach’s captivating style which is a mix of Welsh folk music influences, ethereal vocals in Welsh, dreamy electronics, entrancing harp and hammered dulcimers, pop hooks, and occasionally potent jazz funk bass.

The physical copy of the album comes in a double CD package that includes the music CD and a companion disc titled Yn dy lais / In Your Voice. This bonus CD contains comments by writers, actors, poets and musicians (including Peter Gabriel, Maxine Peake and Rhys Ifans) providing their own interpretations of the tracks, transmitting the meaning to a non-Welsh speaking audience.

Anian is a beautifully crafted album by a group of highly talented Welsh folk music innovators who are taking folk music beyond familiar familiar borders.
