SGAE Foundation to Present World Music Series in Madrid

The SGAE Foundation has organized a world music concert series titled Archipiélagos sonoros (sound archipelagos) that will take place May 2-4, 2014 May at Madrid’s Sala Berlanga. Under the premise that each musician is “an island”, the series will present world music acts based in Spain, including Mara Aranda i Solatge, Olga Cerpa and Mestisay, and Jayme Marques, who will honor influential Brazilian singer Dorival Caymmi on the centenary of his birth.

The series begins on May 2 starring Mara Aranda and Solatge. Mara comes from Spain’s eastern Mediterranean coastal area and has become a leading performer of various forms of Spanish and global roots music. Her career started in the late 90s. Mara’s most recent works include Deria (2010), which received major national and international awards, and Lo testament (2013), a current vision of the music and songs of the Mare Nostrum (Mediterranean Sea), awarded best folk album of 2013 by Colectivo Ovidi Montllor.

On May 3, Olga Cerpa and Mestisay will bring their Atlantic sounds from the Canary Islands. This will be the group’s first performance in Madrid in seven years. Olga Cerpa will present material from their last two records: Pequeño fado y otras canciones de amor (Small fado and other love songs) and y Atlántico Radio (Atlantic Radio). Their show will showcase Portuguese fado, Latin American song influences and Canary Islands’ soundscapes.

 

 

Archipiélagos sonoros concludes on May 4 with a Jayme Marques tribute to Brazilian composer Dorival Caymmi on the centenary of his birth. Bossa nova diffuser in Spain for many years, Brazilian musician Marques will perform songs from one of the most influential artists of Brazilian popular music.

With Archipiélagos sonoros, SGAE Foundation aims to disseminate some of the folk music proposals of today as a sign of cultural diversity.
