Zouk music is one of the world’s great dance rhythms, formed in the small Creole French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. Kassav‘ began by taking inspiration from a traditional rhythm of carnival, the mas a sen jan (from the name Saint John), on which they throw in funky bass, rocky guitar, salsa brass, heavy keyboards, drums from the countryside, and a mixture of Creole languages from Guadeloupe and Martinique.
