Novalima

Planetario (Wonderwheel Recordings, 2015)

Peruvian global electronica masters Novalima have released their best album so far. Planetario was recorded while the band was on tour and features high profile guests from various parts of the globe. Novalima combines electronic dance music with acoustic instruments beautifully. On this occasion, the electronic side of the band plays a more modest role, giving way to abundant acoustic percussion.

Planetario is loaded with fabulous grooves drawn from Afro-Peruvian traditional music and other sources. This new recording has a strong association with Colombia. Novalima had a productive recording session in Bogota organized by members of salsa powerhouse La-33. Colombian artists featured include vocalist Eka Muñoz, Pernett and La Mamba Negra. Other international guests include Marc de Clive Lowe (UK/NZ), Panko from Ojos de Brujo (Spain), and Cuban rapper Kumar.

On the album, Novalima celebrates the life of accomplished Peruvian percussionist and longtime band member Mangue Vasquez who died in 2014. Mangue asked his band mates to celebrate his life with song and dance and that’s exactly what the band has done.

Planetario brings Afro-Peruvian music to a new audience with its well-crafted combination of traditional roots and cutting edge electronica.
