Lonesome River Band Celebrates Summer Nostalgia on New Single “Summertime”

Lonesome River Band has released “Summertime” (Mountain Home Music Company), a song focused on childhood memories and the traditions of summer.

‘Summertime’ was sent to us by our good friend, Sherrill Blackman, who has pitched us so many great songs from different writers,” said band leader and banjo player Sammy Shelor. “It reminded me of my summers as a child, all the things I did growing up during my school vacations in my hometown and spending summers with my grandparents.”

The track highlights familiar scenes from summer childhoods, including skipping rocks, swimming holes, homemade ice cream, and lemonade. Its chorus reflects on carefree days spent outdoors and memories of returning home by dinner time.

Honeysuckle on the wind
Takes me back to when I was a kid
I’d play all day, Mama didn’t mind
As long as I was home by suppertime

The arrangement incorporates the band’s signature “Telegrass” sound, with electric guitarist Rod Riley playing a prominent role. The song’s lyrics also contrast past experiences with the digital distractions that compete for children’s attention today. A banjo-mandolin duet closes the recording.

We hope it brings back memories for our fans!” Shelor added.

For decades, Lonesome River Band has remained one of bluegrass music’s most established acts. Shelor, a five-time International Bluegrass Music Association Banjo Player of the Year and recipient of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass, continues to lead the group alongside fiddler Mike Hartgrove, and a lineup that mixes veteran experience with younger musicians. The band remains known for its strong vocals, accomplished musicianship, and distinctive approach to contemporary bluegrass.
