Nancy Vieira’s Lovely Tribute to the People of Cape Verde

Nancy Vieira – Gente (Galileo MC, 2024)

Nancy Vieira‘s latest album, Gente highlights her distinct and resonant voice as she weaves tales of Cape Verdean life; its dreams, pains, and joys. Her captivating, sublime, and irresistible vocals command attention worldwide, drawing listeners into a world where tradition meets contemporary expression.

Within Gente, Vieira skillfully intertwines traditional Cape Verdean sounds with modern influences, creating music that transcends borders. From the winding streets of Lisbon to the vibrant rhythms of Africa and the lush landscapes of Brazil, Vieira’s music reflects the diverse cultural experience that has shaped her identity.

Born in Bissau and raised in the Cape Verdean island of Boa Vista and having lived in Santiago and São Vicente, Vieira eventually arrived to Lisbon, a city steeped in fado, pop and other traditions, where she joined the local music scene.

Gente marks a significant artistic progression from Vieira’s previous album, Manhã Florida (2018). It is a meticulously crafted work that bears the fruits of careful planning and artistic exploration. Each track on the album is a testament to Vieira’s encounters, stories, and ideas, woven together with a profound appreciation for humanity.

Recorded in Lisbon’s historic Namouche Studio and the studio of Peruvian musician Jorge Cervantes, Gente benefits from a diverse array of talents contributing to its colorful sound. From the rhythmic skill of percussionist Iuri Oliveira to the melodic contributions of international musicians like Mário Lúcio, Vaiss Dias, Olmo Marin, Luciano Maia, Gustavo Nunes, and Denys Stetsenko, each artist adds their unique flavor to Vieira’s musical vision.
