Carmen Souza Sings About Interrelations in Difficult Times

Carmen Souza – Interconnectedness (Galileo Music Communication, 2022)

Interconnectedness is the title of highly talented Portuguese vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Carmen Souza‘s 10th album. Indeed, Interconnectedness is about humanity and the way we are all mutually dependent. The pandemic challenged and questioned values, morals, humanity, and everything is still so uncertain and vulnerable, this music exposes exactly that vulnerability.

The album was recorded and produced by Carmen Souza and her regular bassist and producer Theo Pascal between Lisbon and London with different lineups, morphing into another chapter of this duo musical partnership. Carmen Souza treats the listener to her unique vocal style that incorporates innovative jazz styles influenced by the work of Bobby McFerrin as well as her Cape Verdean family roots.

In terms of musical styles, Carmen Souza brilliantly intertwines contemporary jazz, Cape Verdean rhythms, neosoul, the South African classic “Pata Pata” and blues.

As with every album that we have made throughout all these years, the music always evolves to other perspectives and meanings as it is performed in the many stages of the world, so I look forward to seeing what this music has in store and to accompanying its evolution.”
