Acclaimed pipa player Wu Man of Carlsbad, California, will be recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts as a 2023 National Heritage Fellow, the United States’ highest honor in the folk and traditional arts. The celebration will take place on Friday, September 29 at 5:30 p.m. ET during a ceremony at the Library of Congress’ Thomas Jefferson Building. This event is open to the public and will be streamed live at arts.gov.
Wu Man is one of the finest performers of the pipa, a centuries-old, pear-shaped, four-stringed Chinese lute. Wu Man has introduced the pipa to new audiences, both in the United States and the wider world of music.
