Hanne Tveter - La Hechicera

Discover the Primal Feminine Power in Hanne Tveter’s New Single ‘Huldra’ – A Captivating Blend of Norwegian Folk, Jazz, and Flamenco

Hanne Tveter, the Norwegian jazz fusion vocalist, presents the fourth single from her forthcoming new album, accompanied by excellent musicians. In her new work, performed in Spanish and Norwegian, she introduces us to Huldra, the seductive and magical sorceress who occasionally lets herself be seen in the Scandinavian forests.

Huldra is a traditional Norwegian song that has stayed with me ever since I heard it performed by Margareta Opheim years ago during a folk music seminar in Voss, a town near Bergen. It has something special for me, this supernatural character who appears in the form of a woman in all cultures,” says singer Hanne Tveter. In the music video that accompanies the single, she illustrates this beautiful story with three forms of women: the girl, the young woman and the mature woman.

Huldra is a word of Norwegian origin meaning covered, hidden or secret, the Lady or Queen of the forest.”

Huldra can make us suffer, or she can help and comfort us. She Occasionally takes children with her to care for or trades them for her own.”

Tveter, already known for her adaptations of traditional songs from Norwegian to Spanish and vice versa, launches this single, a fusion between Norwegian folk music, jazz and flamenco, and which in Spanish would be called Hechicera.

The song invites you to recognize the primal feminine power. In this folk song, Huldra helps a woman with advice on how to put her child to sleep, and in Tveter’s Spanish narration, the woman asks Huldra for a spell for her daughter, so that the girl’s soul will be freed from sorrow and pain.

The song was recorded in Madrid with a cast of top-level musicians. Alongside Hanne’s vital voice, you’ll also hear Canadian flutist Lara Wong as soloist along with a jazz trio consisting of Dani García Diego (piano), Pablo Martín Caminero (double bass) and Shayan Fathi (drums). The arrangement is based on some flamenco tangos in a jazz key.

After releasing three successful duets with the Spanish pianist and singer Diego Amador in 2022, Hanne has continued working on her new album in Spain, always in good company.

With her roots in various musical traditions, Hanne takes us into a Universe where musical borders are crossed and bridges of encounter are crossed. This is her fourth single, after Miel y Sal, Hvite Hestens Vuggesang and Eg Veit i Himmerik ei Borg, from an album that will be released very shortly.
