Peruvian guitarist Rolando Carrasco Segovia has released the album “Carnaval en los Andes Peruvian Guitar” (self release, 2022)
Carrasco describes how the “Carnival” festivities were changing in Europe, inserting themselves into the Christian calendar, giving free rein to fun and thus cleaning sins later with the celebration of Holy Week.
The Spaniards brought the Carnivals, among many other celebrations, to the Andes. Initially, they were celebrated with masks in courtly halls. However, over time, they spread to the general population.
The Andean, coastal and jungle residents adapted the Spanish practices and added them to their annual ritualistic festivities. One example of this is the cortamontes genre.
