Orquestra Afrosinfônica – Orin, a língua dos anjos (Máquina de Louco, 2020)
Orin, a língua dos anjos is the second álbum from a remarkable Brazilian ensemble called Orquestra Afrosinfônica. Notably, the album came out nearly a year ago, coinciding with November 20th, 2020, which is Black Awareness Day in Brazil.
The superb orchestra includes 22 musicians plus a female choir. Together, they make a fantastic mix of Afro-Brazilian and African music, jazz and classical music where creative piano, bass and joyous percussion are interweaved with exquisitely and masterfully-crafted layers of brass, lush woodwinds and the gorgeous choir.
Orquestra Afrosinfônica performs in Portuguese, Yoruba, Lingala and Latin. The material on Orin, a língua dos anjos includes six original songs composed by Ubiratan Marques with Brazilian legend Mateus Aleluia, who provides solo vocals in three of them; along with songs composed together with Dodo Miranda (Angola); and Gerônimo, Lazzo Matumbi, and BaianaSystem, from Bahia, Brazil.
Orquestra Afrosinfônica was created in 2009 by pianist, conductor and arranger Ubiratan Marques.
The lineup includes Ubiratan Marques on piano; Nilton Azevedo on flute; Júlio Santana on flutes ; Indira Dourado on clarinet; Renata Pitanga on clarinet; Léo Couto on alto saxophone; Tukano on tenor saxophone; Vinicius Freitas on baritone saxophone; Everaldo Pequeno on trumpet and flugelhorn; Carlos Cardoso on trumpet and flugelhorn; Gilmar Chaves on trumpet; Toni Joanitã on trombone; Carlos Eduardo on tuba; Angelo Santiago on double bass; Marcos Sampaio on acoustic double bass; Tâmara Pessoa on vocals; Djara Mahim on vocals; Dinha Dórea on vocals; Raquel Monteiro on vocals; Lucas de Gal on percussion; Marcelo Tribal on percussion; Nem Cardoso on percussion and vocals; and Jason Wild on percussion.
