Spirited Ugandan Afrojazz

Milégé – Afwoyo (Naxos World, 2020)

Milégé are an AfroJazz outfit from Uganda, a group of young talented musicians whose enthusiasm is derived from the diverse cultural music traditions of the different tribes of Uganda into which they fuse contemporary elements to express the likeness of the Ugandan people in a more current context. The band’s songs tell stories from Uganda’s tribes and also reflect typical aspects of life in the country.

The name Milégé is borrowed from an ankle rattle, worn during traditional dances that herald the arrival of the chief. This rattle exists in several forms across the African continent.

The album title ‘Afoyo’ means “thank you” and was chosen as a symbol of gratitude.
