Polky – Songs From Home (Polky, 2020)
Songs From Home is the debut full length album from Polky, an excellent Polish-Canadian band based in Toronto. The group features excellent instrumental and vocal work. It was formed by talented Polish ladies and fronted by singer and percussionist Ewelina Ferenc.
Polky’s joyously energetic music is deeply rooted in Polish and central and eastern European folk music, including Carpathian, Jewish, Gypsy, Ukrainian, Slovak and Hungarian influences. In addition, they incorporate additional world music elements such as Arabic percussion and vocals.
The title of the album, Songs From Home, celebrates the multicultural city of Toronto, as well as the musicians’ roots in Poland. “We dedicate this album to the people who have made Canada their home, and the songs that bring us community and give us strength!,” says the band.
Polsky’s previous release was Immigration, inspired by Polish traditional music from the Mazovia region, Polish mountains, immigration to Canada, and even rock band Led Zeppelin.
The lineup includes Ewelina Ferenc on lead vocal, baraban, Polish frame drum; Ala Stasiuk on vocals, dance; Georgia Hathaway on fiddle, vocals; Marta Sołek on suka from Bilgoray, fiddle from Plock, Greek lyra; Peter Klaassen on upright bass; and Tangi Ropars on accordion, backing vocals.
Guests: Wojciech Lubertowicz on duduk; Jaash Singh on darbuka; Ahmed Moneka on vocals; and Andrew McAnsh on trumpet.
