WOMEX Award-Winner Mónika Lakatos Releases Hangszín

Award-winning Hungarian Roma (Gypsy) singer Mónika Lakatos has a new album titled Hangszín. The new recording showcases the living Olah Romani musical heritage, performed by Mónika Lakatos and the Gipsy Voices.

Mónika Lakatos is a renowned Olah Romani artist and a leading world music act from Hungary. As the youngest artist, and the first singer of Romani heritage to ever receive the prestigious WOMEX Artist Award, Mónika is a true ambassador of Hungarian musical traditions.

Mónika Lakatos was born in Hungary to an Olah Gypsy family and learned to sing from her father. She caught the eye of international attention as the singer of Romengo, and with her debut solo album, Romanimo. She recently founded Gipsy Voices to present the fast tempo and pulsating energy of Olah Romani musical heritage. Vocals and an elemental rhythm are the center of the captivating ensemble where Mónika is joined by singers, instrumentalists, and her husband Mihály Mazsi Rostás as well.
