Artist Profiles: Chalo Correia

Chalo Correia was born in 1968 in Luanda, the capital of Angola. He is a singer-songwriter, harmonica player and guitarist.

Chalo grew up in the 1970s and was deeply influenced revolutionary bands like Os Merengues and Os Kiezos.

In the early 1990s, Chalo moved to Portugal, where he practiced guitar and harmonica. He composed songs rooted in traditional and urban Angolan music.

He recorded his debut album “Kudihohola” in 2015.

In Portugal, Chalo is involved in various projects. He leads his own Angolan music band, combines Angolan music and Portuguese fado with his trio, and also performs solo concerts.

Chalo’s style is grounded in semba, rebita, kilapanga, merengue, and muzongo.
