Eva Medina – Rumbo a Babel (Eva Medina, 2019)
Spanish multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Eva Medina is one of the rising talents of Spanish world music. Her solo album Rumbo a Babel (Heading for Babel) incorporates a wide range of musical influences, including Spanish traditional music, flamenco, Gnawa, Arabic, Latin American, jazz, reggae and more.
Eva’s sound has connections to the sound of Radio Tarifa, the acclaimed Spanish world music band that gained international attention. This is no coincidence, the album was co-produced and recorded by former Radio Tarifa multi-instrumentalist Vincent Molino and also features another Radio Tarifa member, Sudanese multi-instrumentalist El Wafir Shaikheldin Gibril. However, as indicated earlier Eva Medina’s style incorporates a larger scope of influences.
Throughout Rumbo a Babel, Eva Medina modifies her vocal style masterfully, demonstrating her skill with various musical styles.
The musicians who participate in the album deliver memorable instrumental performances using a wonderful mix of Spanish, North African and Arabic musical instruments.
The lineup includes Eva Medina on vocals, guitar, controller, bass, bendir; Vincent Molino Cook on nay, bass, piano, keyboards, crumhorn; Wafir Shaikheldin Gibril on accordion, oud, percussion; Juande Garrod on drums; Jaime Medina on panderos (Spanish frame drums), daf; Merche Trujillo on bagpipe; Luis Gálvez Aguiló on cajón flamenco; Patricia Monje on violin; Shady Sultan on darbuka, karkabas; Camille Floriot on trumpet; and Aolani Shirine Beere on violin.
