Brilliant Portuguese Folk Recreations from Supergroup Companhia do Canto Popular

Companhia do Canto Popular – Rebento (Sons Vadios, 2019)

Companhia do Canto Popular brings together some of the finest musicians in the Portuguese traditional and contemporary folk music scene. Their album Rebento is an exquisitely-crafted set of songs that incorporates the rich musical traditions found throughout Portugal. Most of the material consists of recreations of traditional songs from Portugal and neighboring Galicia in Spain.

You’ll find a wide-range of irresistible rhythms, dances and beautiful tunes performed using a diverse collection of musical instruments that include viola braguesa, viola campaniça, sanfona (hurdy gurdy) along with fiddle, concertina, and tastefully intertwined electric instruments with a progressive folk edge. On the vocal side, the ensemble is a real treat, adding captivating male and female vocals together with delightful polyphonic harmonies.

The lineup includes André Sousa Machado (Fausto and various jazz projects) on drums and percussion; Artur Fernandes (Danças Ocultas) on concertina and piano; José Barros (Navegante, 4aoSul) on vocals, viola braguesa, bandolim, cavaquinho, viola campaniça, Irish bouzouki and adufes; José Manuel David (Gaiteiros de Lisboa, 4aoSul) on piano, keyboards, tin whistle, acoustic guitar, flute, accordion, tuba, low whistle, tarota, Galician bagpipe and backing vocals; Manuel Rocha (Brigada Victor Jara) on fiddle; Manuel Tentúgal (Vai de Roda) on sanfona, jaw harp, sequencer, Galician tambourine and vocals; Rui Costa (Silence4) on electric bass, electric guitar and acoustic guitar; Rui Vaz (Gaiteiros de Lisboa, 4aoSul) on vocals; and Sara Louraço Vidal (Luar na Lubre, A Presença das Formigas, Diabo a Sete) on vocals, Galician tambourine and Celtic harp.
