Pablo Paulo Milanés Arias, better known as Pablo Milanés, was born in Bayamo, Cuba in 1943. He was a self-taught artist who started his career evidencing the influence of blues and gospel music. He joined the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC (Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematography) in the late 1960s.
Together with Leo Brouwer, Silvio Rodriguez, Noel Nicola, Sara Gonzalez and Eduardo Ramos, inspired by traditional trova and a style known as filin (jazz feeling), Milanés founded the Nueva Trova Cubana (New Cuban Song) movement, a new style that brought together universal elements together with Cuban native forms. Pablo Milanés became very popular throughout Cuba, Spanish-speaking America and Spain.
Some of his greatest hits included ‘Yo no te pido,’ ‘Los años mozos,’ ‘Cuba va,’ ‘Hoy la vi,’ ‘Yolanda,’ ‘No me pidas,’ ‘Los caminos,’ ‘Pobre del cantor,’ ‘Hombre que vas creciendo,’ and ‘Yo pisaré las calles nuevamente.’
Widely covered by many international artists, Milanés also composed scores for films, documentaries and television series.
In recent years, Pablo Milanés was living in Madrid, Spain.
