Alba’s Edge

Run to Fly (Paddledoo Music, 2015)

Run to Fly is one of the great Celtic music discoveries of 2015. This indie debut album by Alba’s Edge showcases the talent of Neil and Lilly Pearlman, a brother-sister team on piano and fiddle. Although the piano has been used in Scottish and Irish music many times, Neil Pearlman brings it to the forefront, presenting marvelous solo and musical interplay with Lilly’s fiddle.

Alba’s Edge plays original instrumental music composed by Neil and Lilly Pearlman that is founded on Scottish tradition. The group’s innovative sound incorporates jazz elements along with creative electric bass and drumming that switches between captivating Scottish roots and energetic jazz, Latin beat and fusion sections.

Run to Fly was produced and mixed by the great Scottish fiddler Aidan O’Rourke (Lau), who extracted the best out the band and delivered an excellent mix that you can really enjoy with good headphones.

The lineup on Run to Fly includes Neil Pearlman on piano, Rhodes and vocals; Lilly Pearlman on fiddle and vocals; Doug Berns on bass and background vocals; and Jacob Cole on drums, percussion and background vocals.

The band’s name has a double meaning, “Alba” is Gaelic for “Scotland” and Spanish for “Dawn”.

Run to Fly is definitely one of the best Celtic releases of 2015.
