The Carrier (2014)

The West Coast duo Dirtwire has a new EP titled The Carrier. Dirtwire describes its music as “back porch Electro-cana,” a mix of electronic sounds and American roots music. The first cut on the new recording, ‘The Well’, sounds pretty much like Americana with barely any electronics. The song is a call for water conservation at a time of intense drought in California.

It’s on the second piece, ‘Only One’ where the fascinating marriage of electronica and bluesy Americana takes place.

Dirtwire crosses boundaries with ease and ventures into Middle Eastern music on ‘Thunderbird’, mixing the sounds of the eastern Mediterranean with American folk and electronics.

‘Yunan’ continues the hybridization process, bringing in East Asian, South Asian and various global influences in combination with the electrobeats.

The next piece, ‘Damn Rooster’ takes you back to back porch blues, inserting a healthy dose of electronic rhythms.

The mesmerizing ‘Bottles’ creates a wonderful ambient environment with global music feel.

The album ends with ‘Last Call’, where drones combine with harmonica and toe tapping slide guitar blues.

Dirtwire includes multi-instrumentalists Evan Fraser and David Satori, who are based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The duo met while studying world music composition at the California Institute of the Arts, and released their first recording Dirtwire in 2012.
