From Norway comes this excellent recording of Balochi music. Abdulrahman Surizehi is a virtuoso of the benju, a type of dulcimer that appeared in Balochistan in the first part of the 20th century. Balochistan (also known as Baluchistan) is a region that encompasses part of western Pakistan, eastern Iran and southern Afghanistan. Abdulrahman Surizehi’s Balochi music is a reflection of this cross-cultural land.
The fascinating collection includes Balochi traditional and classical pieces as well as original compositions by Surizehi. Joining Abdulrahman Surizehi are Kaseim Hamin on vocals; Es Haq Balochnasab on vocals and tamburag; Ostaad Mohammad Bachal Baloch on dohkor; and Ostaad Moula Bakhsh Noori on tamburag.
Abdulrahman Surizehi currently resides in Oslo (Norway). In the Norwegian capital, Surizehi participates in several fusion-based music projects. He has built up significant prestige and prominence among connoisseurs of Balochi tradition both inside Balochistan and beyond.
