Hadoukly Yours (Naive Records, 2014)

As the new name of the ensemble indicates, the celebrated Hadouk trio has become a quartet. The world fusion group has sold over 60,000 albums and won many prestigious awards. After Steve Shehan left to develop his solo project playing the Hang, he was replaced by Jean-Luc Di Fraya on drums.

The ensemble’s sound is a laid back mix of jazz and world music with Middle Eastern influences. The pieces are sometimes structured, while other times the musicians venture into jazz improvisation and an acoustic jam vibe. Wind instrument master Didier Malherbe creates much of the group’s identity with his duduk and various types of fascinating flutes.

The current lineup of Hadouk Quartet includes Didier Malherbe on duduk, flutes; Loy Ehrlich on hajouj, gumbass, yayli tanbur; Eric Löhrer on guitar, lapsteel, banjo, cavaquinho; and Jean-Luc di Fraya on drums, percussion, voice.

Hadoukly Yours is a splendid recording, loaded with subtle nuances and a wide variety of global music instruments.
