Pacifika
Amor Planeta (Six Degrees, 2014)
Canadian Latin pop band Pacifika is marketed and described as world music. In reality the popular group plays mainstream Latin pop in Spanish language which hardly qualifies as world music. Pacifika occasionally adds a reggae beat or loungey bossa nova, but the pop hooks and radio-friendly beats make them more suitable for a Latin pop audience.
“This record is much like the title of the album, which means Love Planet,” says vocalist Silvana Kane, a native Peruvian. “It’s love in its various forms: love of nature, love of another, love that is lost, love that is eternal—basically all that makes us what we are as humans.”
Album highlights include the dreamy ‘Sueños’ and ‘Las Bellezas’ with its mix of ethereal vocals and eelctronic beats.
