Kyzyl-Moscow III – Traditional music and throat singing of Tuva features several leading Tuvan traditional music acts that performed at the Kyzyl-Moscow Festival held in November 2006 at the Culture Center “Dom” in Moscow. This was the third edition of the festival, produced by musician and promoter George (Arat) Beletsky.

The Kyzyl-Moscow III album is a real treat for fans of throat singing. Tuvans are masters of this mesmerizing vocal music style and here you have some of the finest performers. The artists featured in 2006 included Saradak ensemble, Folklore Ensemble “Tuva”, Vadim Oorzhak, and Mai-ool Sedip.

Children’s folklore ensemble Saradak comes from Turan, in the Bii-Khem district of the Republic of Tuva. Members of this ensemble were 9 to 13 years old at the time. They played traditional musical instruments and performed Tuvan folk songs using the traditional style of throat singing known as “khoomei”. Members include Khovalyg Hamer-ool on vocals; Kuvak Aydin on igil, vocals; Kuluktar Ayres on igil, vocals; Sat Kezhik on chanzy, vocals; Salchak Belek on chanzy, vocals; and Saryg Genghis on kengirge, dungur, vocals.

Folklore Ensemble “Tuva” (also known as Tyva) hails from Kyzyl in the Republic of Tuva. This group is a true legend of Tuvan folk music. Their repertoire includes Tuvan folk songs using 5 styles of throat singing: khoomei, sygyt, kargyraa, ezengileer, and borbannadyr. Lineup: Evgeny Saryglar on igil, vocals; Eduard Damdyn on byzaanchi, vocals; Ayas Kuular on doshpuluur, vocals; and Ayas-ool Kholazhyk on kengirge.

Vadim Oorzhak was born in the village of Kungurtug. He was a disciple of throat-singing maestro Rodion Munzuk. Vadim Oorzhak graduated from the Kyzyl College of Arts, where he studied a bowed musical instrument called byzaanchi. Vadim started his musical career as member of two ensembles: Alash and Ertin Bulak. He was the winner of the Grand Prize award at the International symposium Khoomei 1995. He has performed at many international music festivals, such as Saradak, Ustuu Khuree, Sayan Ring, etc.

Mai-ool Sedip was born in the village of Ak-Dovurak in the Barum-Khemchik district of Tuva. He began to study indigenous folk music since childhood. He graduated from the Kyzyl College of Arts, where he studied various musical instruments, such as doshpuluur, igil and byzaanchi. He has performed throat singing since he was a young child, especially the khoomei and sygyt styles. Mai-ool is currently a member of ensemble Alash and the Tuvan National Orchestra.

The folk styles in Kyzyl-Moscow III include couplets; caravan songs, blessing songs, nomad dances, shepherd songs, Tuvan epic songs, fishing songs, and odes to horses.

The festival received the direct support from the Moscow Government, the Committee for Culture of Moscow, the Ministry of Culture and National Policy of the Republic of Tuva, GreenPeace of Russia, the Eurasian Cultural Center “The Legend” and Culture Center “Dom”.

Kyzyl-Moscow III is a fabulous introduction to one of the most wonderful vocal traditions in the globe.
