Songs of Conscience and The McDades at Celtic Connections 2007 on Tuesday, January 23rd

Glasgow, Scotland – The first of the Songs of Conscience concerts takes place today at the festival, alongside a Canadian folk/jazz/world music band making their Scottish debut, and the third best Scottish band ever (according to a reader poll in The List magazine in 2005) playing the ABC.

Building on the success of previous vocal extravaganzas like Gaelic Women and Scottish Men, the two Songs of Conscience concerts at this year’s Celtic Connections both feature an international cast of top vocal talent, united by their commitment to songs that engage with political, moral, social and spiritual issues.

The shows are also intended to honor Glasgow’s illustrious place in the joint history of folk music and political activism, presenting the types of songs and singers once heard in the bars of the Broomielaw on the city’s most prestigious stage.

This is the first of the two Songs of Conscience concerts. From the US, tonight’s program features Tom Paxton, an enduring icon from the 1960s Greenwich Village scene, who celebrates his 70th birthday this year.
