San Francisco (California), USA – As part of his U.S. tour, Cuban composer and pianist Omar Sosa brings his unique style of Afro-Cuban jazz to Blue Note New York on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 12 & 13, 2007. For the first time in New York with his new Afreecanos Trio, Omar Sosa continues to explore the African roots of traditional musics throughout the Diaspora, using modern jazz harmonies and the latest audio technology.
The new ensemble features Cuban drummer extraordinaire Julio Barreto, and Mozambican electric bassist Childo Tomas. The ensemble fuses the folkloric with the contemporary, the tribal with the urban – all with a Latin jazz heart.
Accompanying the Afreecanos tour is a new live CD release titled “Promise”. Recorded in front of a live audience at the NDR radio studios in Hamburg, Germany, the CD features the Afreecanos Trio, plus noted Italian trumpet player Paolo Fresu, Senegalese vocalist Mola Sylla, and Cuban flute player Leandro Saint-Hill. This live recording anticipates the release in February 2008 of Omar Sosa’s next studio album, entitled “Afreecanos”. The new live CD is available only from www.melodia.com and at the show.
Omar Sosa has released 15 recordings on the Oakland-based Otá Records label since 1997, including 2002’s GRAMMY-nominated Sentir.
