Santana
Live at Montreux 2004 (Eagle Eye Media EE39144-9, 2007)
True delight is what comes to mind when describing this outstanding DVD. Hymns for Peace was recorded live at Montreux Jazz Festival in 2004. Bringing some of the finest jazz, world music and rock musicians together, Carlos Santana put together what Montreux Jazz Festival Director Claude Nobs described as "the highlight in the thirty-eight year history of the festival."
The cast was a dream team formed by the New Santana Band and guests that included Wayne Shorter on sax, Chick Corea on keyboards, Herbie Hancock on piano, John McLaughlin on guitar, Ravi Coltrane on sax, Idrissa Diop on vocals and talking drum, Angelique Kidjo on vocals, Patti Austin on vocals, Nile Rodgers on guitar, Gerardo Vélez on percussion, Barbara Morrison on vocals, Sylver Sharp on vocals, Omar Hakim on percussion, Carlos Santana‘s son, Salvador, on keyboards; and Cherie Mitchell on keyboards.
The double DVD includes a wide variety of great pieces, ranging from Santana classics to anthemic songs by Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, John Lennon and much more. The main theme throughout the concert is a call for world peace, which is something that has always been very close to Carlos Santana‘s heart.
With such a cast of world class virtuoso performers, most of the songs are performed in jam band fashion, with outstanding solos. And, what else is there to say, the music is simply fabulous and the concert was videotaped by an experienced crew using several cameras so the visuals and audio are excellent as well.
