Over 85 bands from 15 countries will be performing at this year’s GrassRoots Festival, including legendary South African jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela, bluegrass-rock trio The Avett Brothers, Comoros Island-born diva Nawal, roots hip-hop collective Arrested Development, roots rockers Donna the Buffalo, Taiwanese music and performance group A Moving Sound, Australian ska-rock superstars The Cat Empire, Louisiana legend Preston Frank and his Zydeco Family Band, Malian bluesman Vieux Farka Touré, Native American rocker Keith Secola, Grammy-nominated kora master Mamadou Diabate, Canadian worldgrassers The Duhks, and dozens more.The organizers of the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance are expecting total weekend attendance to surpass 25,000 for their four-day festival, to be held July 19-22 in Trumansburg, New York (10 mi. North of Ithaca).
The festival is in its 17th year of bringing musicians from around the world to the small town of Trumansburg, and attracts attendees from around the US and Canada for a four-day, four-night, four-stage extravaganza of music and dance performances. The festival is the largest self-sustaining non-profit music festival in the country, operating with no corporate sponsorship and with all festival proceeds going to benefit arts, education and the fight against AIDS.
The festival was featured as one of USA Today’s Top 10 Summer Festivals in 2007, alongside such greats as the Newport Folk Festival, the Santa Fe Opera Festival, Tanglewood and the San Francisco Blues Festival.
