The 34th annual San Francisco Free Folk Festival (SFFMC) will once again be held at Presidio Middle School at Geary and 30th Ave. on June 12 – 13, noon -11 pm. It is the SFFMC’s annual to its beloved Bay Area – free and open to the whole family.

The festival features more than 50 concert performers; dozens of dance workshops; open mic; impromptu music in the hallways and over 40 music and song workshops such as Jewish folksongs, Brazilian Choro Roda, Songs of the Copper Family, Tunes of Northern Italy or harmony singing in its Flash Mob Choir. There are also loads of great family activities and performances for children and the whole family.

We have a little musical something for everybody. For those of you who love bluegrass and old-time music we have the impossibly talented high-energy bluegrass band Poor Man’s Whiskey and the gypsy jamgrass band from Humboldt, Absynth Quintet. Don’t miss our jug band mini-fest Saturday morning or the incredible Jugtown Pirates.

On Sunday, we have the Bay Area blues and classic folk legend Barbara Dane with Johnny Harper. Be sure to watch the Red Hot Chatchka’s heat up the stage with sizzling klezmer, enjoy a capella group Jou Jou for Eastern European harmonies or groove to the Gypsy/Jazz/Japanese music of Shamalamacord. Finally, don’t miss the unique guitar stylings of Matthew Montfort from Ancient future.”

While the festival would be a special event under any circumstances, what makes it unique is the fact that it is an all-volunteer effort. Festival details can be found at www.sffolkfest.org.
