Saltwater Rhythms 2012, a musical celebration that will see three of Australia’s Torres Strait Island’s strongest female singer-songwriters joining forces to mark the 20th anniversary of the landmark Mabo Native Title decision, will take place on Friday 24th August at Bennetts Lane, Melbourne.
The stellar lineup includes Melbourne’s indigenous jazz songstress and leading lady Liz Cavanagh, playing alongside the award-winning Lisa Maza and acoustic-soul diva Jessie Lloyd.
The significance of the historic Mabo Native Title decision, which legally recognized Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders rights over land ownership, is still very much felt today. “The importance of the event can’t be overstated,” said Lloyd. “This night is about remembering who we are, where we come from and sharing our personal relationship to the Torres Strait through music.”
It’s also an opportunity for three, strong, talented, Melbourne-based Torres Strait Islander women to come together under the one roof and share their musical mastery. “This is going to be a cracking night of music and a gig the three of us feel very connected to,” said Lloyd.
Performing on the night will be Liz Cavanagh, who has earned a reputation for her captivating vocal ability and imaginative arrangements. Born in Babinda, Northern Queensland, Cavanagh has spent the last 17 years of her life living in Victoria. Her father is a Wonnarua man and she retains strong links throughout Sydney. Her mother’s people are traditionally from North Queensland and the Torres Strait. “All of my family were singers – my aunties, uncles, brothers, sisters and cousins. I didn’t know anyone who couldn’t sing,” said Cavanagh.
She’ll be joined by the multifaceted Melbourne-based Murray Islander artist Lisa Maza who, as a singer, performer, actor, playwright and documentary film director, is a creative force to be reckoned with.
Rounding out the bill is Jessie Lloyd – originally from the tropics of Far North Queensland, Lloyd performs an acoustic interpretation of soul and groove. Winner of a WAM Song of the Year and Nominated as Female Artist of the Year at the 2009 Too Solid Awards, her strong vocals compliment her subtle lyrics and accomplished guitar playing.
