The Subtropical Sound of Uruguay

Campo (Bizarro Records/Universal Music, 2012)

Campo is the artistic name of Uruguayan musician and songwriter Juan Campodónico and also the title of his new solo album. He’s best known for his work with electronic tango sensation Bajofondo, his collaborations with renowned Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jorge Drexler, Cuarteto de Nos, La Vela Puerca, Ximena Sariñana, and NTVG.

Campo contains a mix of pop, electronica, cumbia pop and some tango. If you are a fan of Bajofondo, don’t expect much tango except for some bits of bandoneon here and there. The recording is in essence a pop album featuring guest vocalists who perform in both English and Spanish.

Madrid-based Uruguayan star Jorge Drexler makes a guest appearance on ‘1987.” This is one of the highlights of the album together with the tango-infused ‘Turn of the Lights’ and the delightful instrumental pieces ‘El Viento’ and ‘Zorzal.’

Other guests featured in the album include Swedish singer Ellen Arkbro and electronic musician Pablo Bonilla

“La Marcha Tropical” is the first single taken from Campo. The video, directed by Charly Gutierrez and produced by Oriental Films, is a “simple story of self-assurance“, said Campodónico.
