Reunited Dead Can Dance to Perform at Durham Performing Arts Center

Dead Can Dance
Renowned world music and neoclassical duo Dead Can Dance will be performing at DPAC, Durham Performing Arts Center on September 1, 2012. This is part of their world tour that includes 12 cities in the United States, including Durham, North Carolina, to be accompanied by the release of a new album.

It’s always special when DPAC is selected to be part of a World Tour like this where there are less than 20 US dates. Dead Can Dance are playing some of America’s iconic theaters like the Ryman in Nashville and the Beacon theater in New York City. DPAC’s great sight-lines and acoustics will shine with audiences at this very exclusive event,” said Bob Klaus, GM for DPAC.

Dead Can Dance is an ambient neoclassical world music duo that formed in Melbourne, Australia in August 1981. Its mainstays are Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry. The band relocated to London in May 1982 and disbanded in 1998, but reunited temporarily for a world tour in 2005.

Dead Can Dance released over nine albums between 1984 and 1995 creating an enduring blend of world music influences, medieval chants, folk ballads, baroque styling, Celtic flavors and dark ambient electronics. Their 1996 album Spiritchaser reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top World Music Albums Chart.

After Dead Can Dance, Lisa Gerrard expanded her artistic vision, collaborating with famed composers such as Patrick Cassidy and Pieter Bourke, as well as releasing a number of solo albums, including The Silver Tree. Additionally, Gerrard has scored or contributed to several films including Gladiator, Heat, Mission Impossible 2, Layer Cake, Insider, Nadro, Ali, Whale Rider, Black Hawk Down, Tears of The Sun, Constantine and El Niño de la Luna.

Brendan Perry released his solo album Eye of the Hunter, on 4AD Records in 1999, which was very similar to his work in dead Can Dance. His next solo album, Ark, came out in 2010. Brendan played every instrument and wrote all the lyrics. All of the instrumentation on Ark was derived from samples and synthesizers.
