Taabolo Koura: A Malian Family Legacy in Full Bloom

Mah Damba – Taabolo Koura (One World Records, 2026)

On Taabolo Koura, Mah Damba reaffirms her place among Mali’s most treasured voices. This is a modern record with deep traditional roots, one that draws strength from jali lineage.

The album’s spirit rests in family. Nephew Badje Tounkara’s masterful jali ngoni provides essential string lines, while son Guimba Kouyaté threads virtuosic guitar figures through the arrangements. At the same, choruses from daughters and granddaughters add charm and warmth.

Taabolo Koura also embraces unexpected colors. Antoine Girard’s accordion introduces a wistful feel that recalls Mah Damba’s grandfather Ousmane Soumano, while Fournel’s North African guembri nudges several pieces toward the trance-like pull of Gnawa music. Guests Clément Janinet (violin), balafon master Bakary Diarra and Sebastian Quezada (percussion) broaden the overall sound with class and expertise.

The balance between relaxed, intimate songs and faster rhythms keeps the album in constant motion. Most importantly, however, Mah Damba’s voice remains its emotional center: dignified, radiant and polyvalent.

Jean Lamoot’s mix deserves special praise. His work preserves acoustic warmth and character. The result is a record of graceful generational gathering, where various branches of the jali tradition converge around Taabolo Koura.
