Guitarist and composer Pipo Romero has released “Tangos del Atlántico,” his second preview of the upcoming album Alborada, due out in October. This follows his recent interpretation of the classic Gardel tango “Por Una Cabeza,” arranged for solo acoustic guitar.
With “Tangos del Atlántico,” Romero revisits a personal hallmark: the inclusion of flamenco tangos in nearly all his recordings. This time, however, he expands the concept further. His acoustic guitar is layered over 1980s-style drum machines and electronic percussion, forming a hybrid backdrop that supports two distinct refrains, a signature feature of his compositional voice.
The production bridges traditional and contemporary elements with ease. Vocalist Santiago Ibarretxe (Primital Brothers) adds an experimental layer, while the track concludes with a genre-bending shift into rock and bluegrass. It ends on a striking note: a banjo-style acoustic guitar solo that nods to American roots music through a flamenco lens.
The title reflects Romero’s transatlantic tours in the U.S. and Canada, experiences that inspired both literal and symbolic crossings. “It’s one of the most layered pieces on the album,” he says. “It brings together many worlds, yet everything finds its place.”
