José Almarcha’s ‘Un Nuevo Paseo’ Redefines Flamenco with a Modern Twist”

José Almarcha – Un Nuevo Paseo (self-released, 2024)

Flamenco guitarist and composer José Almarcha has released his new album, Un Nuevo Paseo. This new set includes previously released singles like the deeply grounded flamenco rock piece “Raíz y Paloma” (a soleá tribute to Manolo Sanlúcar); the passionate chamber flamenco song “Baladilla de los tres ríos” featuring two of Spain’s finest singers, acclaimed Andalusian singer-songwriter Javier Ruibal and flamenco luminary Carmen Linares; and the magnetic, soulful song “Plaza de Santa Ana (Caracoles)” with vocals by the splendid Granada singer Gema Caballero.

Un Nuevo Paseo intertwines flamenco guitar’s intricate patterns and dazzling rhythms with rock music’s intensity and soul’s groove.

The album’s compositions speak without lyrics, expressing emotion and creativity through Almarcha’s distinct guitar work. He is supported by a band of notable musicians, including Víctor Guadiana on electric guitar, Jorge Santana on drums, Marco Niemietz on bass, Andre JahJah on piano, Martha Ramos and Aury Salazar on backing vocals. Additionally, Almarcha is joined by prominent collaborators like singers Javier Ruibal, Carmen Linares, and Gema Caballero, harmonica virtuoso Antonio Serrano, trombonist Santiago Cañada, and dancer Lucía Ruibal.
