Ghanaian Highlife collective Santrofi returns with “Amina,” the first single from their new album Making Moves. This eight-piece ensemble, which gained international recognition with their 2019 debut Alewa, continues to innovate by blending traditional Highlife rhythms with modern funk influences.
“Amina” draws inspiration from a Ghanaian childhood game, fusing past traditions with contemporary sounds. The track serves as an ideal introduction to Making Moves, an album that both honors Santrofi’s Highlife roots and explores new musical territories. The album combines raw Highlife grooves with funk-driven dance tracks and introspective, soulful songs, addressing the complexities of life.
Santrofi collaborates with rising Ghanaian artists like AratheJay and Kofi Jamar, pushing the boundaries of Highlife by incorporating elements like funk. The band’s horn section and rhythmic foundation remain rooted in Highlife, ensuring the genre’s pulse runs through every note.
Formed five years ago under the leadership of bassist Emmanuel Kwadwo Ofori, Santrofi brings together some of Ghana’s finest live musicians. Members have performed with legends like Ebo Taylor, Pat Thomas, and AB Crentsil, as well as contemporary stars such as Kidi, Yaw Tog, and Black Sherif. Their dynamic sound reflects a deep connection to their Highlife heritage, while also embracing the evolving landscape of Ghanaian music.
