Cuarteto Karê – Kuña Purahei (2023)
Formed in Rosario in 2010, Karê is a remarkable male vocal group known for its original sound that intertwines various genres, particularly Argentine and Hispanic American folk music. The ensemble includes four immensely talented singers who deliver delightful polyphonic vocals using western classical, jazz, and folk music techniques, accompanied by a guitar. This way, they aim to recreate traditional songs in an innovative, charming way.
Their fifth album, Kuña Purahei, features a diverse repertoire of Ibero-American music, with guest composers and performers lending a delightful, immersive, engaging, distinctive, and beautifully crafted South American or Spanish flavor to each track.
Contributors include globally recognized artists like Susana Baca (Peru), Marta Gómez (Colombia) and Lara Bello (Spain) along with lesser known but equally talented singers: Lula Bertoldi (Argentina), , Ana Prada (Uruguay), Paula Herrera (Chile), Sheila Patricia (Spain), Marta Solís (Spain), Katia Cardenal (Nicaragua), and Alba Carmona (Spain).
The album not only highlights Ibero-American women as performers but also celebrates their crucial role as composers and subjects of the songs. The Karê vocal ensemble includes Julián Cerdán (tenor), Gianni Iazzetta (baritone), Mauricio Cuesta (bass), and Diego Petrelli (tenor, guitar, arrangements).
The idea for the album emerged in 2019 after tours in Portugal and Spain, where they met numerous female singers. As a consequence, each track on the album features a talented and moving female voice, expanding the group from a quartet to a quintet.
The album’s title, Kuña Purahei, derives from Guaraní, meaning “woman’s song or voice,” reflecting the homage to women in the songs selected for this recording.
