After more than a decade away from the studio, legendary Breton fest-noz band Loened Fall returns with Start Da Lac’ho, a live album set for release on May 30. The first single, “Ar Bloavezh 1932 (2),” is out today.
Known for their powerful mix of kan ha diskan (Breton call-and-response singing) and expressive instrumental arrangements, Loened Fall once again bridges deep-rooted tradition with dynamic live energy. The album captures the group’s signature sound: vocals by Marthe Vassallo and Ronan Guéblez, bouzouki and guitar from Marc Thouénon, Hervé Bertho’s improvisational fiddle, and Ronan Le Dissez’s bombarde, echoing the finesse of classic Breton “sonneurs de couple.”
True to form, Start Da Lac’ho was recorded live during a specially organized fest-deiz in January 2025, where dancers, whom the band calls their “sixth member,” added the essential spark of communal rhythm.
The album title draws from a Breton saying: “Al loened fall zo start da lac’ho,” “Bad beasts are hard to kill.” A nod to the group’s name (“Loened Fall” means “Bad Beasts” in Breton) and their resilience through health setbacks and the pandemic, the phrase reflects their determination to keep the music, and the dance, alive.
About the Single: “Ar Bloavezh 1932 (2)”
This fiery suite plin evokes the hardships of 1932 and the impact of the Great Depression on rural Brittany. True to Loened Fall’s spirit, it channels both grief and release, honoring a tradition where dance is as much about survival as celebration.
