On the Lash – Fireside (2025)
Midwest-based Irish folk quartet On the Lash will release their debut EP, Fireside, on April 4, 2025. The ensemble masterfully combines western classical music precision with folk storytelling and contemporary Celtic and bluegrass influences. Indeed, the group delivers a fresh yet rooted sound that honors tradition while embracing modern sensibilities.
Fireside presents the band’s extraordinary musicianship, beautiful vocal harmonies and creative approach. The final track, Dog in the Distance, features two traditional Irish tunes with original lyrics and melody by Myers. The accompanying music video highlights the band’s remarkable ability to weave classic and contemporary elements seamlessly.
Formed in 2022, On the Lash includes highly talented Western Michigan University graduates Elizabeth June (flute/vocals), Joel Tyrone Myers (mandolin), John Robey (fiddle/stomp), and Patrick Hartson (guitar/bass). While their foundation is in alluring traditional Irish music, their arrangements incorporate flavorful elements of American folk, world music, and pop styles.
The band has performed at festivals and venues across the U.S., including the KVMR Celtic Fest (California), Yachats Celtic Fest (Orgon), Longs Peak Highland Fest (Colorado), Celtic Classic (Pennsylvania), and the Michigan Irish Music Festival. They have shared the stage with artists such as Jeremy Kittel, Talisk, Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas, and opened for Altan in their first year.
Each member of On the Lash brings a distinct background in classical and folk music:
- Elizabeth June (flute/lead vocals) grew up in a musical family immersed in bluegrass and earned a master’s degree in flute performance from the University of Michigan.
- Joel Tyrone Myers (octave mandolin, backing vocals) developed a passion for Irish music and composition through his early work with the Chelsea House Orchestra.
- John Robey (fiddle, backing vocals) transitioned from classical violin to modern improvisational styles, shaping his approach to Celtic music.
- Patrick Hartson (guitar, backing vocals) began with classical cello, later exploring rock and metal before returning to Celtic music.
Since their formation, On the Lash has also led educational workshops, sharing their expertise in Irish and folk traditions.
“When we formed the band in 2022,” said band member John Robey, “each of us brought to the table a unique set of talents, experiences, and influences. From classical technique and precision, to a host of folk and pop musical endeavors, to a creative hunger for the new and original, our goal in joining together was to deliver a project that would both encapsulate the breadth of our musical journeys and honor the influences that brought us here.”
