Violeta Parra – Las últimas composiciones de Violeta Parra (Vampisoul, 2025)
Vampisoul is reissuing in 2025 the album Las Últimas Composiciones de Violeta Parra (the last compositions of Violeta Parra), originally released in 1966. This new edition restores the album’s original sound from remastered tapes and features the iconic artwork, all presented on high-quality 180g vinyl.
Violeta Parra was a highly influential singer-songwriter from Chile. Her passionate folk-rooted songs and her commanding vocals resonated with millions of Spanish-speakers, from South America to the Caribbean, Mexio and Spain.
Recorded for RCA Victor despite Parra’s contract with EMI Odeon, this was her final work, capturing a poignant combination of personal sorrow and sharp social commentary. After her return from Europe, Parra poured her reflections into unforgettable tracks like “Run Run Se Fue Pa’l Norte,” “Maldigo del Alto Cielo,” “Rin del Angelito.” Most significant was the globally revered song, “Gracias a la Vida” (Thanks to Life). Indeed, it has become a classic and a standard for many singers, and its influence extended beyond the Spanish-speaking world. Notably, “Gracias a la Vida”t was later performed by prominent artists such as Mercedes Sosa, Jon Baez, Yo-Yo Ma, and Omara Portuondo.
Tragically, this album would be her last release during her lifetime, as Parra took her own life in February 1967, only months after its debut.
The album underwent a notable transformation in 1974, with Chilean composer Nino García adding string arrangements and new full-color artwork replacing the monochrome original. This version dominated for decades. However, legal disputes over the master tapes throughout the late 1990s hindered access to the original recordings, making this faithful reissue a significant milestone.
